Gum disease has been found to have a connection with endocarditis and cardiovascular diseases. Serious gum disease can cause bacteria to enter an individual’s bloodstream and this could lead to infection in the heart or other organs. It is therefore necessary to ensure that your dental health is in optimum condition by following some simple reminders.

1. Use a tongue scraper

A film of food particles is usually found on the tongue and cannot be completely removed with a brush. Microorganisms feed on the food residue and emit sulfurous or acidic compounds that cause decay or bad breath.

2. Change your brush

This should be done regularly every two or three months. Many people think that because the bristles are not frayed or spread their brush can be used longer. However, all brushes need to be replaced every two or three months. Otherwise you would just be putting more bacteria back into your mouth.

3. A diet for white teeth

Avoid red wine, tea, coffee and soda. These liquids, just like smoking, can stain the teeth and cause yellowing. If they cannot be avoided then brush immediately or rinse your mouth after consuming them.

4. Eat brushing foods

Apples, popcorn, fresh celery and carrots are foods that help clean the teeth while they are being eaten. Their crispness helps remove bacteria and food residue from the mouth. Save them for the last part of the meal especially when you have no time or opportunity to brush after eating.

5. Natural gargles and an alternative cleaning agent

Apple cider helps remove stains and whiten teeth and it also has antibacterial properties. Gargle apple cider in the morning or evening just before brushing. Baking soda can remove yellowing when used once a week. It can be used like powdered toothpaste but if your gums become too sensitive then you can switch to salt. The use of salt once a week has similar effects but baking soda produces a more noticeable difference.

6. Look at alcohol free mouthwashes

Antiseptic mouthwashes with alcohol dry out the mouth. A dry mouth is a better breeding place for bacteria and decay so make sure to get a mouth rinse without alcohol. If you already have dry-mouth as a side-effect for taking a number of medications then consider chewing on sugarless gum. This will stimulate the flow of saliva for a healthier mouth.

7. Make flossing a habit

Keep extra floss in your bag, in the car or in your office where you can easily find and use them after a meal or a snack. Having food stuck between your teeth for a considerable amount of time is never a good thing. Brush twice a day at the very least, before going to bed and after waking up in the morning are crucial times for brushing to get rid of the bacteria build-up that has occurred during sleep.

We live in a culture that reserves youth and beauty, thanks to 21st century technology, artistry, techniques and materials, it is possible to restore people’s worn, aged teeth to more youthful physiological positions, rejuvenating the face by providing underlying support. This rejuvenation technique enables the cosmetic dentist to take years off patient’s faces by realigning the bite and restoring it so the muscles are in their optimal, relaxed positions.Enhancing your smile through the modern techniques in cosmetic dentistry has been getting raves from millions of satisfied patients all over the world. Cosmetic dentists are everywhere, giving hope to those who are willing to give anything just to achieve a Hollywood smile. Not everybody is fortunate to maintain perfect teeth but thanks to the advances in technology, equipment and training in the dental practice, a lot of smile makeover procedures are not available wherever you are.

A cosmetic dentist can assess the overall health of your teeth and mouth and will make the necessary recommendations on what cosmetic dentistry procedure or treatments suits you best. You may get a restorative or a reconstructive dental procedure with results you can see in a few hours, or go for the longer treatments that need years to complete.

Cosmetic dentists differ from the general dental practitioner in the sense that most of the general dentists address emergency problems like a throbbing toothache but a cosmetic dentist is more on the aesthetic side, more focused in restoring your appearance and enhancing your smile. Aided with the latest tools and state-of-the-art technology, a cosmetic dentist can craft the necessary components to produce that you need.

Finding a reputable cosmetic dentist should be the first important step you must do to ensure that you get only the best results. Faulty dental practice or some other factors may have caused your teeth to be stained, discolored, crooked, or even missing but all these can be treated. Cosmetic dentistry procedures do not come cheap. You may have to shell out from hundreds to thousands of pounds to get treatment but the money you pay out will be worth it. You may find dentists who offer low prices but remember you usually get what you pay for.

Cosmetic dentistry procedures vary depending on what you need. Common types of cosmetic dentistry procedures include teeth whitening where you have the option of going for laser procedures or the traditional home teeth whitening procedures, dental bonding which fixes defects on the surface of your teeth, porcelain veneers which provides a more natural look albeit priced a little bit higher, dental crowns and others. You still need to follow proper dental practices to maintain the health of your teeth after a cosmetic dentistry procedure.

With Masterpiece Smiles, you’re not just getting a dentist office; you’re getting a partner. As one of the leading cosmetic and general dentistry offices in St. Louis, they work with you to create a custom look that is not only attractive but natural looking. You can feel comfortable knowing you and your family have a dentist that listens to your needs and incorporates them into the smile you’ve always dreamed of.Dr. Mike Frith is St. Louis’ first accredited cosmetic dentist by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, a distinction awarded to less than 1% of cosmetic dentists nationwide. He was also named the Top Dentist in St. Louis as voted by other dentists by St. Louis Magazine in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

“This is a good question, which we hear daily. The brand of the toothbrush is not nearly as critical as the type of bristle, the size and shape of the head and how frequently you replace your brush.

We recommend a soft bristled brush with a small head. The soft bristles are most important for the health of your gums. A small head allows you to get around each tooth more completely and is less likely to injure your gums.Daily frequency of brushing and replacement with a new brush are much more important issues than the brand you choose.

We recommend replacing your brush at least once a month.

My employees and I all brush, on average, 5 times a day. We brush first thing in the morning, after each meal and at the end of the day .

If you are not able to do this because of your busy schedule, we recommend brushing twice a day at a bare minimum.”

Wisdom teeth or the third molars become impacted when they fail to come out in the right alignment or do not fully emerge through the gums. The condition may cause swelling of the affected area and severe pain. If not remedied, infection may occur and spread to the surrounding tissue resulting in a condition called pericoronitis. The set of cuspids and bicuspids could also get impacted, but this happens rarely.

Depending on the exact condition, your dentist may recommend the removal of impacted teeth.

Tooth loss and dental implant surgery

Tooth loss can be attributed to many factors, including the natural cycle of the teeth for toddlers, tooth decay and accidents. Good oral hygiene can prevent tooth loss to a large degree, other than loss of baby teeth and those occurring as a result of accidents.

When tooth loss occurs due to dental caries and various periodontal diseases, it can be remedied with dental implant surgery.
Dental implants—tooth root substitutes which are anchored surgically in the jawbone—are an alternative to dentures. The procedure is only recommended for those with sufficient bone density in the jaw. They should also have no chronic conditions such as diabetes and be willing to maintain good oral hygiene.

Jaw-related problems

Unequal jaw growth: In some people, jaw growth tends to develop unequally from birth. This can affect the way a person speaks, eats and swallows and lead to improper teeth alignment. This defect could be corrected with braces, but, more serious problems require oral surgery to correct the alignment of the jaw.

Irregularities of the fit of dentures can also be corrected by oral surgery. This makes it possible to wear dentures in the long-term. In some severe cases, a bone graft may be necessary.

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ) are a complex group of problems that affect the jaw joint. They are sometimes called myofacial pain dysfunction or Costen’s syndrome. Since muscles and joints work together, a problem can lead to facial pain, ear pain, headaches, stiffness, bite problems, clicking sounds or locked jaws.1 This could be treated with oral medication, physical therapy and splints. A joint surgery is performed when this disorder is at an advanced stage.

Other conditions requiring oral surgery

Oral surgery is also performed for the following:

* To repair fractured jaws and broken facial bones
* For removing abnormal growths or tissue
* Repair of cleft lip and cleft palate are usually done by a team of doctors because a series of treatments and surgical procedures are needed to correct these conditions.

Oral and dental surgery is a necessary part of maintaining good oral health. Latest dental technologies enable speedy and effective performance of surgical procedures. Dentists and oral health practitioners will provide the care that you need, while being sensitive to your dental anxieties. In most instances, timely dental visits and treatment can save you money and unnecessary suffering.

Today, adult orthodontics has advanced a great deal and is gaining wider popularity. Many adults conscious of their appearance are utilizing innovative treatment procedures for correcting dental malocclusions and other anomalies. Among the many advances in adult orthodontics, Invisalign braces have become very popular.

Invisalign-Convenient Treatment Alternative for Adults

Apart from teeth straightening, Invisalign can be used in adults for rectifying various dental irregularities such as widely spaced teeth, projected teeth, overcrowded teeth, cross bites, over bites, under bites, open bites and many more. The main benefit of using Invisalign, the clear invisible braces is that patients can complete the entire treatment schedule without others noticing they are undergoing orthodontic treatment. These braces are removable. Therefore, patients can consume food comfortably and also maintain good oral hygiene.

Invisalign Treatment for Permanent Results

Invisalign corrects teeth irregularities without using metal wires or brackets. These clear plastic aligners are specially designed for each patient with the help of three dimensional computer imaging technology according to their bite impressions. The patient has to wear these set of aligners for two weeks, which will then have to be replaced with a fresh set, which speeds up the straightening procedure. This process is to be repeated until the final results are obtained.

The normal duration of Invisalign treatment in adults is about twelve months. During the treatment phase, the patients are advised to consult the orthodontist every four or eight weeks, so that the doctor can check the amount of progress achieved through the treatment and also make necessary adjustments in the braces according to the requirements.

Consult an Experienced Orthodontist

When you are considering orthodontic treatment with Invisalign, make sure to seek the services of a skilled orthodontist. It is also important to have a talk with your doctor about your requirements and the ultimate results expected from the treatment. The orthodontist can then adopt the most suitable treatment plans that would provide better solutions.
